100%accuracy

Start typing to begin. The clock runs from your first key.

Type for three minutes and see your net speed in words per minute, plus accuracy and errors. Free, no signup, nothing saved. Every key plays a real recording of a mechanical switch, and you can change the switch above the words.

How the 3 minute test works

The clock starts on your first key and runs for 3 minutes. Type the words as they appear, press space after each one, and use backspace to fix a word before you leave it. Words you finish with a mistake are marked, and the cursor stays on the line so you never lose your place.

Your result is net speed. Five characters count as one word, and only characters in correctly typed words count toward it, so guessing fast and making mistakes will not raise your score. Raw speed, which counts everything you typed, is shown next to it so you can see the gap.

What is a good score in 3 minutes

Most people sit somewhere around 40 words per minute on a test like this. Around 60 is comfortable for office work, 80 and above is fast, and 100 or more is rare outside people who type all day. Treat those as rough bands rather than rules: they shift with the text, the keyboard and how tired you are.

Accuracy matters as much as speed. A job test that asks for 50 words per minute almost always asks for a minimum accuracy too, often 95 percent or better, and fixing mistakes costs time you would rather spend typing.

Why 3 minutes tells you more than 1

A one minute test rewards a short burst. Three minutes is long enough for your hands to settle and for tiredness to show, so the number you get is closer to the pace you could hold for a real task. If your score drops a lot after the first minute, your starting speed is higher than the speed you can sustain, and that gap is the thing to work on.

Type it on a different switch

The test plays the recordings Kiiwi ships, six of them here. Pick another from the menu above the words and keep going. If one grabs you, every switch has its own page where you can hear it on its own and compare it with similar ones: browse all switch sounds.

Questions

How long is the test?

Three minutes, counted from your first keystroke.

How is WPM calculated?

Net WPM is the number of characters in correctly typed words, plus their spaces, divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. Raw WPM counts every character you typed.

Is my score saved?

No. The result is shown on this page and nothing about your typing is stored or sent anywhere.

Do I need a keyboard?

Yes. The test needs a physical keyboard, so open it on a computer.

Why does it make sound?

Every key plays a recording of a real mechanical switch, as a demo of what Kiiwi does on a Mac. Turn your volume down or off if you would rather type in silence.

Make every key sound like this, everywhere

Kiiwi plays real switch recordings as you type in any Mac app, from the menu bar. It needs macOS 14 or later, costs $6.99 once, and hears that a key was pressed, never what you typed.
